Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is located on the Big Island of Hawaii and covers over 320,000 acres. The Park includes active volcanoes such as Kilauea and Mauna Loa, as well as several volcanic craters. Mount Mauna Loa stands over 13,600 feet high while Kilauea at only 4,100 feet, is particularly famous for its continuous activity since 1983.
While other volcanoes are known for their domes or conical shapes, Kilauea is a shield volcano. These shield volcanoes have a more free-flowing and runnier lava, creating a softer slope. The park offers many gentle trails and picturesque overlooks along the caldera rims, including the Devastation Trail, the Sulphur Banks Trail, and the KÄ«lauea Iki Overlook.
About 3 million visitors view these iconic volcanoes and craters every year, making it a popular tourist destination. In addition to hiking and helicopters, the park provides visitors with amazing views. From the Kilauea Visitor Center experience the lava lake inside the Halema'uma'u Crater. To witness this landscape's otherworldly illumination, I recommend staying until darkness falls.
Mount Etna, Italy
A mountain that dominates the city of Catania, Mount Etna sits on the eastern coast of Sicily. Despite its size, the highest active volcano in Europe stands 11,000 feet tall. Mount Etnas first known eruption took place several thousand years ago. The world's longest history of eruptions has occurred at this crater.
Mount Etna is considered to be a low risk volcano despite its long history of eruptions and active status it is popular for skiing and hiking, taking tours by bus, SUV, or helicopter. Cable cars are available to reach the summit's highest points. Don't miss the truly rare and captivating volcanic smoke rings when you encounter the majestic Mount Etna.
